Following John Armstrong's practices I made two lists. One of realities I would have to deal with. One of things I'd like to include (or avoid).
Givens
- A 3-car garage with one single and one double door in front, a depth of 26 feet, a vertical post located 12 feet from the left wall and 13 feet from the back wall and a 10'8" ceiling. A beam runs across the ceiling from left wall to right wall 13' from the back of the garage (the support post holds this up)
- The garage must be shared with miscellaneous tools and the family cars
- Workbench space must be available for both railroad and non- railroad work
Druthers
- Represent as much as possible of the SPC mainline
- Operation oriented (trains must go from somewhere to somewhere with a purpose)
- Continuous running provision
- Lots of scenery, wide vistas, mountains, rivers, bridges, etc.
- Relatively long trains (10' or more, you can have 18 of the 24' freight cars used by the SPCRR in 10' of On3)
- Wide curves and minimal grades to match the SPC's practices.
- A large scale to make detail visible
