Mike is engineer on first class train 111, the Bear Creek Express West. This train was too long to make it up the 2.8% grade to
Oakhill with a single SP AC-5 cab forward for motive power. So it added up a mid-train helper at South Jackson. Pete was liberated from his duties as
Redland yardmaster and is driving the helper, BC&SJ 39, a USRA light 2-10-2. The helper will be cut out at the west
end of Bear Creek before No.111 proceeds to Salem.
