left-arrow up-arrow right-arrow    Bear Creek and South Jackson Operations - BC&SJ III Op Sessions - April 12, 2014 - 5
The yard crew at South Jackson yard is banging cars. This version of the yard went into service almost two years ago. The original South Jackson yard was hastily thrown together with bits and pieces of lumber, track, and turnouts salvaged from the previous BC&SJ. When I connected the top of the helix to the wall, South Jackson was an inch too high. I knew when I built the first yard it was only temporary, so I took the opportunity to rebuild it using knowledge gained from eight years of operating to improve the track plan.

Dave (near) the first trick yard master is a Bear Creek's regular operators. He's giving pointers to his assistant, a Bear Creek first timer. His FRS radio head set lets him communicate with the dispatcher. Unlike running under track warrants where nearly everyone has a radio, only the dispatcher, yard master, and Oakhill operator are so equipped. The remainder of the crew doesn't need to speak directly with the dispatcher as they use the employee timetable and their train orders to control the operation of their trains. This makes for a much quieter op session.
