After covering the base scenery (pink foam in this case) with Sculptamold I put down a layer of spackle for the road base. The spackle here has been smoothed with a putty knife but is still waiting for the wet sponge treatment to smooth it out.

The grade crossing is shown magnified. Note the somewhat haphazard placement of the timbers to represent a poorly maintained crossing.

I'll be masking off the grade crossing when I start the sponge treatment and while painting the road.
